With fly gear, I’ll take a fast 8-weight rod. If I’m fishing conventional gear, I like a bass stick designed for frogging. Strong, sharp hooks are essential for not only penetrating the jaw but also staying pinned as a bowfin spins and twists wildly during the rumble. These fish have hard mouths with lots of cutting and clamping power. No matter how you target bowfins, the same rules apply to tackle. They’ll run at your feet or head for snags. Sometimes you have to agitate them into striking by dropping a fly right in their faces, but when they hit it’s like a black hole opens in the water. “Targeting them shallow when you can see them is especially fun. Buy your guide a coke and snickers bar and they'll bend over backwards to make sure you have a great day on the water. All in all I highly recommend this outfit. We also caught multiple mudfish (bowfin) which i thought was Justin's specialty, but you'll quickly hear about his disgust with them. Be sure to listen to his advice about setting the hook, casting locations, and reeling fish in. Quite a few 2-3 and some 4 pounders and we landed a 6.2 lb that was a blast.
😜 A front was pushing in which slowed fishing down that day but he still put us on fish. He didn't even whine when I grabbed a baitcaster to start fishing, although he quickly found out I probably cast one better than he did. Landing the fish with a net is like an art to him as he saved one that popped off the hook, he used his cat-like reflexes to get it in the boat. He's very accommodating for all things needed with the trip. Very experienced guide, as he's kind of a big deal on the local bass tourney level.
Enjoyed a 6 hr day on Okeechobee with Justin. Got to meet Nate on the water and it seems these boys have a good thing going on. And did a follow up call to ensure our satisfaction. He even did follow up calls to ensure our trip's plans. From the initial call to Mike, I felt like I had made a good choice.
